Research
We support societal resources being directed towards matters that further the public interest.
To enable this, we:
1.
Will serve as a watchdog of the Council of Europe
to ensure it is acting in the public interest, focussing on the debates around counterterrorism, surveillance, human rights, democratic participation and public interest journalism. We will seek to encourage the prioritisation of peace and disarmament over war.
2.
Review judgements of the European Court of Human Rights
and their implementation (by member states and soft power exercised by the Council of Ministers) from a public interest perspective.
3.
Review the decisions and judgements of the International Court of Justice (ICJ)
and the International Criminal Court (ICC), from a public interest perspective.
4.
Conduct studies on broader threats to democracy worldwide
particularly examining the role of corporatisation and financialisation in determining state, corporate and individual power and undermining accountability.
5.
Recognise the resource and social detriment of the arms trade
the military-industrial complex and active wars in today’s world. We recognise that significant pieces of research in this area are carried out by specialists, and we will work with them to make their work more accessible and digestible to lay readers to build better public debate and scrutiny of war and violence.
